Hunterdon County population has tripled since 1950

Hunterdon County's population in 2016 stands at 128,349 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That's three times larger than the county population in 1951.

Hunterdon County's population in 2016 stands at 128,349 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That's three times larger than the county population in 1951. 

As reported by the Hunterdon County Democrat in 1951, the "county's official population figure stands at 42,736 according to the U.S. Census Bureau which has just released authoritative figures in the 1950 census. Earlier this year, the unofficial estimate was reported at 42,689 for this county."

The last stock car races of the year in the Central Jersey area are slated to be held Sunday, Oct. 21 at Flemington Fairgrounds. More than 50 top-flight drivers are expected to participate in the event, sponsored by Flemington Lions Club for the benefit of the March of Dimes and other community welfare projects. Among those who will be participating in the crowd-pleasing, slam-bang races are Paul Barbiche of Flemington and Al Tasnatti and Frank Schneider of Lambertville.

A plea for stricter enforcement of State laws against motorists who pass school buses discharging children was made Monday night before Flemington-Raritan Board of Education. Harry Boughner of Rt. 28-30 appeared before the board charging that there is ''a very apparent disregard of the law'' and that parents are becoming more fearful daily for the lives of their youngsters.

With practically every store in Flemington planning to close and manufacturing firms as well on Columbus Day, the Legion excursion to the Sesqui-Centennial should be the biggest trainload in recent years.

One hundred delegates from local PTAs attended the county fall meeting in Pittstown to mark the opening of activities. Miss Jennie Haver asked all the associations to help teachers carry out the music and art contest.

A ''congregate sheltered living'' center for senior citizens may be the future use of St. John's Parochial School in Lambertville, which was closed three years ago and remains unused.
