FLEMINGTON - Somerset County Superior Court Judge Yolanda Ciccone has upheld the results of the June Republican primary for two Borough Council seats, according to a report on TAPintoFlemingtonRaritan.
A court-ordered recount of the election confirmed that John Gorman and Susan Peterson had won the election, NJ Advance Media previously reported, and can run in November's General Election. The primary results were challenged by fellow candidate Alan Brewer.
Four people ran for the Republican nomination to two, three-year seats, with Gorman getting 163 votes and Peterson getting 161. Brewer followed with 156 votes, and Abraham Seckler got 131. Kim Tilly wasn't challenged in her bid for GOP nomination to a separate one-year unexpired term.
The challenge focused primarily on Peterson's residency status, with Brewer claiming that Peterson had not lived in the borough long enough to meet residency requirements for candidates.
County Board of Elections Chairman Stewart Palilonis previously stated: "We reviewed a residency questionnaire filed by Ms. Peterson and determined that she was eligible to vote in the primary."
Facing Gorman and Peterson will be Democrat candidate Harry Gerdes, who wrote his name on the Democrat ballot in the June primary and won his party's nomination. As of Monday, fellow Democrat Joey Novick's name continues to appear on the ballot. Gerdes' acceptance of the nomination had been received by the Hunterdon County Clerk's Office on Monday morning.
No Democrat filed to run for the unexpired term.
