15th anniversary of 9/11 being marked in Hunterdon County

There are two events on Sunday in Hunterdon County being held to mark the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Patriots Point in Clinton will be the site of a ceremony from 8-9 am. on Sunday. It is located on Old Highway 22 in front of Clinton House. 

In Raritan Township, the township Fire Company and Hunterdon Medical Center will be hosting a 9/11 Stairclimb to honor those who died in the terror attacks. It begins at 8 a.m. at the Hunterdon Medical Center parking deck, 2100 Wescott Drive.

The Patriots Point ceremony starts with addresses from each of the town's first-responder organizations, as well as veterans organizations and public officials, according to a news release. A minute of silence will be observed with at 8:46 a.m.

This will be the fifth year the event will be offered by Life Celebrant Ruthann Brown of Celebration of a Lifetime, who has been caring for the maintenance and beautification of Patriots Point for over 12 years.

There will be a collection of new bed-in-a-bag and pillows for the men and women at Veterans Haven North. For those wishing to contribute funds for this purpose, a collection will be made.

Those wishing to retire tattered or faded American flags can bring them for respectful disposal by Rolling Thunder, who will be refreshing the colors of the US and POW-MIA flags on the flagpole at Patriots Point during this ceremony.

Special guest music will be provided by Monica 'Lil Sis' Harvey of Veterans Music Ministry, Stapleton, Nebraska.

Two Hunterdon County schools have also been involved in projects marking the anniversary. Seventh and eighth grade students at Milford Public School spent part of Tuesday working on "A Project of Remembrance 2016."

On Friday, the upper grade students will present a school-wide Patriot Day assembly featuring the flag, poetry readings, pledges of peace, singing the National Anthem and writing letters to service men and women around the world.

In addition, students at Woodglen School in Lebanon Township learned about 10 victims of the attacks and planting 2,997 flags to honor them. In classes on Friday, fifth grade teachers and social studies teachers will be talking to the students about 9/11.
