Middle school students at Milford Public School have undertaken an oral history project to honor the long-time residents of their hometown community.

MILFORD - Middle school students at Milford Public School began an oral history project to honor the long-time residents of their hometown community.

"A Project of Remembrance 2016" began the first week of the school year when the students organized a school-wide assembly to mark the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Following the program, students created a living anthology to document the importance and impact residents' lives have had in shaping the borough.

Local historian and author William Honachefsky, Jr. visited the school on Wednesday, providing the students with a behind-the-scenes look into researching and documenting local history.

His book, "Postcards from High Bridge," is a compilation of scenes and images taken from postcards that depict life in High Bridge during the 19th and early 20th century.

Local historian, resident and Milford proprietor Robert Castagna spoke about the importance of preserving local history, commended them on their vision and commitment to provide a lasting legacy for future generations. He also presented many artifacts from Milford, including arrowheads and a tomahawk head found in front of his bed and breakfast, Chestnut Hill on the Delaware.

Students will be writing individual resident histories and using WeVideo to produce multi-media stories as the next phase of "A Project of Remembrance 2016." Those being interviewed will be back on Dec. 14 to attend the holiday luncheon and school concert.
