RARITAN TWP. - As the finishing touches are being done to the new Costco off Route 31, the company has announced it will be opening at 8 a.m. on Nov. 17.
A preview of the mega store giant located on Walter E. Foran Boulevard will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Nov. 16.
The 150,000-square-foot Costco, which includes a gas station, is being constructed on a 25.1-acre site that once part of the former Yale Materials Handling complex. Costco announced earlier it plans to hire up to 300 employees for its new location.
As part of the Planning Board's 2013 approval of the project, some 5.5 acres will be deeded to the township, including an athletic field and a 110-space parking lot across Junction Road from Hunterdon Central Regional High School.
Three building lots totaling about 11 acres have also been subdivided out for future development, it was previously reported.
Costco is located across from Raritan Town Square - a shopping center that includes a Lowe's and Walmart - built on the former Flemington Fairgrounds.
In 2010, the 44-acre complex was designated as an area that needed redevelopment. In 2012, crews demolished Yale's 328,000-square-foot warehouse and office complex. Yale closed in 1998 after its parent company, NACCO, moved out of New Jersey.
