EAST AMWELL - Steven Wescott and his goat, Miles, are nearly at the end of a 3,600-mile journey from the Space Needle in Seattle to New York City's Times Square.
Wescott spent nearly four years on the road - having taking time off during the winter months - is close to completing the trek known as "Needle 2 Square."
He will be at the Hunterdon County Fair Grounds at South County Park, located off Route 179, at 5 p.m. Thursday to talk about the journey. His trip has raised over $100,000 for Uzima Children's Home in Nairobi, Kenya, which helps drug addicts, as well as children impacted by drugs.
Wescott plans to finish the walk at Times Square on Oct. 1.
In a 2013 interview outside outside Kansas City, Kan., Wescott said having a goat walk with him turned out to be a great way to raise funds. At the time his companion was a goat named LeeRoy Brown, who died after accidentally eating something poisonous during the journey.
"He wasn't supposed to be a gimmick," Wescott said of the goat, who, like Miles, had canvas saddlebags on his back. "He was just going to help carry the load, and now he is the reason why people talk to me."
The rock guitarist had already been considering walking across the country when he was voted out the band he was in. He started his journey on May 2, 2012.
