"A Project of Remembrance 2016," created to mark the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, was held at Milford Public School on Sept. 9, 2016. It was also the beginning of an oral history project that honors the long-time borough residents.

MILFORD - The terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, occurred before any of the students at Milford Public School were born, but many of them had heard stories about the tragic event from parents and grandparents who recalled the day vividly.

These memories and stories, many of them about courageous acts and volunteer responders, provided a glimpse into the significance of that day, and became the driving force behind "A Project of Remembrance 2016."

The eighth grade class at Milford Public School began working on the project before the end of the school year last year, and, on Friday, presented a school-wide assembly to honor the 15th anniversary of 9/11 and to launch the beginning of an oral history project that honors the long-time borough residents.

The assembly featured student readings about "A Changed America," "The 9/11 Living Memorial," poetry recitations, pledges for peace and a performance of the Star Spangled Banner.

Students then assisted the younger grades with placing patriotic flowers around the "A Project of Remembrance 2016" banner on display outside the school.

The assembly also marked the beginning of an oral history project that will involve students inviting residents to be interviewed, so their histories can be captured through story.

The goal of the project is to create a living anthology that honors the community by representing the importance and impact residents' lives have had in shaping the borough and to provide a lasting legacy for future generations.

Sponsors for the "A Project of Remembrance 2016" Project include ShopRite of Hunterdon County, Lowe's of Flemington, Eagle Fence and Supply of Branchburg and the Solid Products Division of Wehrung's Lumber in Ottsville, Pa.
