Delaware River Tubing got site plan approval from Alexandria; some work must be done before it can open.
ALEXANDRIA -- Delaware River Tubing is moving closer to being able to open, now that Alexandria Township has approved the site plan for its operation on Frenchtown-Milford Road.
The township Zoning Board of Adjustment memorialized a resolution on the site plan approval at its meeting Thursday night. The review looked at issues including parking and traffic. Once conditions of the approval are met, the tubing company will legally be able to open.
Last year it operated without township zoning approval, racking up $2,000/day fines.
Delaware River Tubing's opening delayed
A court hearing on a challenge of those fines was put on hold while Crance tried to work things out with township officials. He sought and received a conditional variance from the township Zoning Board in early May, then proceeded with the site plan approval process.
The zoning board voted in favor of Delaware River Tubing's site plan on June 29 and finalized that decision on Thursday night. Conditions that must be met weren't immediately available.
"The Alexandria Board was very thorough but fair," Crance texted after the site plan's OK. "They covered all the public concerns while being sure all the safety issues were very thoroughly addressed. ... Now we must work closely with the township officials to hurry and get all the safety improvements completed to be able to get the business open as soon as we can to save what we can for the season."
The tubing company's website anticipates opening in mid-July. "Construction is nearly complete, however it is taking a little bit longer than expected," reads a status update. "Our new anticipated opening date is Friday, July 15, 2016. We have upgraded our parking lot and our main facility to make your experience even better."
