Four people are seeking the Republican nomination for two Flemington Borough Council seats in the June 7 primary.

FLEMINGTON -- Four people are seeking the Republican nomination in the June 7 primary for two Borough Council seats, according to Borough Clerk Jodi McKinney.

Those running include Susan Peterson, executive board chair of the Flemington Business Improvement District, Abraham Seckler, and incumbents Michelle Oberst and John Gorman.

As of Tuesday, no Democrats had filed to run in the primary. The filing deadline to have a name appear on the ballot is April 4.

Peterson, a long-time volunteer in the borough, is the owner of Teaberry's Tea Room and a founder of the Business Improvement District's Restaurant Association. She did not respond to a request for comment.

This month borough council approved a plan to create a new non-profit corporation to oversee the special improvement district, replacing the existing non-profit that is managed by the current Business Improvement District board.

The board has not yet stated what it's next steps are, although some members have resigned and its three paid staff members - two part-time office employees and Executive Director Megan Jones-Holt - were laid off.

Previously, board members stated any remaining funds in the current corporation would be retained by the existing Business Improvement District board, while borough council has contended the funds need to be turned over to the new corporation and its yet-to-be finalized board. It was previously reported that the new corporation would be established by June.

Seckler, a local entrepreneur, is co-owner and vice president of operations at 3 Beards Beer Company

Oberst, an independent travel agent, was elected in 2015 to a 1-year term and is council liaison to the existing Business Improvement District board. She also serves on the administration, fire and rescue, Fleming House, office of emergency management and redevelopment committees.

Gorman, a retired engineer, was elected in 2013 and serves on the department of public works, parks and recreation and shade tree committees.
