To the editor:
Recently my husband and I have experienced cars driving through crosswalks at different locations in Flemington. We had three incidents of almost being hit by speeding cars after we were already within the crosswalk that we reported to police.
Some drivers do not know that pedestrians have the right of way in the crosswalks and there are point violations and fines for not observing these laws. Pedestrians, persons with disabilities including persons in wheelchairs, walkers or scooters are especially vulnerable to accidents caused by drivers who do not respect these laws.
We recently wrote letters to Joseph Colillilio, the owner of Flemington Shop-Rite regarding pedestrian safety in front of Flemington Shop-Rite. He responded promptly by installing two new stop signs in pedestrian crosswalks in front of Flemington Shop-Rite.
We have notices a significant change in driver behavior since they were installed a week before Christmas, and almost every car is stopping to let pedestrians cross safely.
We want to thank Mr. Colillilio very deeply as this will prevent any accidents from occurring. We say Shop-Rite truly is World Class.
