'Shalom' | Gone Fishin'

Sure, we may bump into each other at the various Flea Markets in New Jersey and Pennsylvania that I attend and clearly, I may hook up with another newspaper and you may find my pearls of wisdom elsewhere. But for now, I'm sad to say "bye!"

mannyluftglass.jpg

By Manny Luftglass
The Hebrew word, "Shalom," has three separate meanings, first, is "Hello" and next comes "Goodbye" and lastly, Jewish people use it to mean "Peace Be With You." So to all my readers who have been loyal to "Gone Fishin' over the many years, this column is a combination of all three, but mainly, "Goodbye."

Sure, we may bump into each other at the various Flea Markets in New Jersey and Pennsylvania that I attend and clearly, I may hook up with another newspaper and you may find my pearls of wisdom elsewhere. But for now, I'm sad to say "bye!"

"Gone Fishin'" began in February of 1971 in the Somerset Spectator and then I wrote it for the Somerset Messenger Gazette. Along the trail, I wrote it for Anglers News, East Coast Angler, Fishing and Hunting News, Jersey Angler, as well as for Tee Vee Money Saver and North American Fisherman (and maybe a few more that I forgot about). Unfortunately, none of them have survived as long as your faithful angler has!

I was the Freshwater Editor of the Fisherman Magazine and wrote features for them as well as for On The Water and have written and/or published 25 books to date, 16 of them about fishing.

So to repeat, "Shalom," I hope to see you all in the near future, either in person or via another "Gone Fishin'" column.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all.

Scuze me, gone fishin'

N.J. brothers rent theater out for Star Wars screening

Filling the AMC Dine-in Theatre at the Bridgewater Commons mall with more than 150 people, brothers Chris and Stephen Kamnitsis treated their clients, family and friends to an opening day screening of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

BRIDGEWATER -- Filling the AMC Dine-in Theatre at the Bridgewater Commons mall with more than 150 people, brothers Chris and Stephen Kamnitsis treated their clients, family and friends to an opening day screening of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

Starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Darth Vader, Greedo, a Stormtrooper and the Emperor's Royal Guard posed for photos with children of all ages, guests ordered food and then the film began without credits at 7 p.m. making this audience just minutes ahead of the rest of the east coast.

"A lot of people want to know how I swung this, but that I won't reveal," Chris Kamnitsis said. All he would say is that the decision to screen the film happened nearly a year ago, and that the event was approved by AMC and Disney.

Guests at the event included clients of Beacon Financial, a financial and insurance planning firm for individuals and small businesses in Flemington where Chris is a founding senior partner and Stephen is vice president of financial services, as well as their family and some of their closest childhood friends.

Growing up in Delaware Township, Chris said he and his friends were big Star Wars fans. Later in life that passion grew, as Chris began collecting memorabilia like a cast of Stormtrooper armor and even more as he started watching the sequel trilogy with his kids.

"It's very rare to have something that has the commonality to appeal to the young and the old. I have clients bringing their children and their grandchildren. My one childhood friend drove here from Tennessee," Chris said. "It's amazing that we all get to enjoy and experience this together. It's a social scene and that's what's awesome about it. I've had little sleep in two days because i'm so excited," Chris said.

Characters from the 501st NorthEast Remnant Star Wars Costumers also said that it's "the magic of Star Wars" that brings people together, and it's why they dress up.

Dressed as Greedo, Brian Shank of Piscataway said that the group is involved in various charity projects visiting libraries and hospitals, which is often the most rewarding part of their work.

"We're huge Star Wars fans and it's great to be in costume and sharing that love," he said.

Once the film concluded, Norman Titus of Columbia, Tennessee, said that although he did not consider himself a big fan, watching the movies with his sons has "brought it all back."

As for his boys, Liam and Sawyer, they said the movie was "the greatest ever."

Speeding motorcyclist tracked to home, charged, say cops

Officers traced the registration and caught up with the driver later, police said.

CLINTON TWP. -- A local man faces multiple charges for allegedly speeding off on his motorcycle after initially pulling over for police.

clinton township police cars 2015

Jordan Dudley, 28, is charged with eluding, reckless driving, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, speeding, failure to maintain lane, and driving an expired vehicle.

The incident happened on Dec. 11, around 3:10 p.m. Patrolman Brian Dickson stopped a 2005 Honda CBR motorcycle on Route 626 after a computer check showed that the motorcycle's registration was expired.

The motorcycle pulled to the shoulder of the road but as Dickson was getting out of his patrol vehicle, the motorcycle sped off, police said.

Worst state for speeding ticket? N.J.; here's why

Dickson reported seeing the motorcycle driving dangerously on Route 626 and then onto Route 22, but he didn't chase it because he already had its license plate number.

Instead, Dickson and other officers went to the Clinton Township residence to which the motorcycle was registered, investigated, and ultimately made contact with the motorcycle's driver, Dudley, who voluntarily returned to the residence.

Dudley was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was charged, then released.

Today there are too many questions, not enough answers | Letter

When I was younger, I had all the answers.

To the editor:

When I was younger, I had all the answers. As I aged, questions became more frequent and answers more elusive, such as:

If terrorism is the biggest threat to America, why does our Government have more  IRS  agents than the FBI, CIA, NSA, DSA and Homeland Security combined?

Why is our president more concerned about one 3-year-old Syrian orphan than the 30 million American children who start their day without breakfast?

If our government is truly meeting the medical, rehabilitative, and psychological needs of our wounded veterans, why am I constantly receiving letters from the  VFW, DAV, Wounded Warriors and other civilian organizations stating that our veterans are in crisis and need my financial help?

How many of the thousands of Syrian refugees planned to be allowed into America will be relocated to Chappaqua, Beverly Hills, Washington, D.C. or the Hamptons?

If ethanol is expensive to manufacture, harmful to certain engine components, and only marginally effective in slowing the Greenhouse Effect, why did our government authorize increasing its proportion as a gasoline additive to 20 percent?

How come Leonard Lance, Corey Booker and Robert Menendez are willing to "fight for me" when they campaign, but are not willing to answer my letters or the questions I pose to them after they are elected?

As there is no government body willing to guarantee that any new gun control legislation will be obeyed by terrorists, gang members or mentally disturbed people, why do they continue to press for more of these laws when only law abiding citizens will be bound by them?

Why did I save money, start a 401k plan, buy bonds and practice financial frugality to prepare for my retirement, when all this is taxed as I withdraw the money?

How come the media focuses on the tent cities housing refugees in the mid-east and ignores the four million homeless Americans, of which, 25 percent are children?

Those are a few of the questions that haunt my thoughts. Does anyone else have any?

N.J. school board called FBI on Muslim teacher after firing, lawsuit says

"She was humiliated, discriminated against, and dismissed," the teacher's attorney, Omar Mohammedi, said. "But they didn't stop there. They went on and called the FBI on her."

RARITAN TWP. -- Sireen Hashem, a Muslim teacher at Hunterdon Central Regional High School, had just lost her job in what she described in a lawsuit as a firing motivated by religion discrimination when the FBI came knocking on her door in July.

The agents told Hashem they were investigating a report that she told school board members "they would be sorry" if they didn't reconsider the decision not to renew her contract as she made a plea to keep her job in June.

"This is a teacher, a very qualified and very loved, very competent teacher, working for the benefit of the school. She was humiliated, discriminated against, and dismissed," Hashem's attorney, Omar Mohammedi, said Friday.

"But they didn't stop there," he said. "They went on and called the FBI on her. This is very problematic, and very dangerous. The treatment is beyond comprehension."

Hashem, an Arab and Palestinian Muslim, filed the religious discrimination lawsuit in federal court in Newark this week.

Muslim teacher files lawsuit alleging religious discrimination led to firing

The 17-page lawsuit details two years of interactions between Hashem and those named as defendants leading up to the decision not to renew her contract with the district. The defendants include Hunterdon Central Regional District Superintendent Christina Steffner, high school Principal Suzanne Cooley, and two teachers who supervised her, Robert Zywicki and Rebecca Lucas.

Steffner released a statement Thursday saying, "I respect the personnel confidentiality rights of all employees, and it would be inappropriate for me to publicly comment about job performance or personnel matters.

"However, I want to very clearly state that Ms. Hashem's allegations against me are untrue. I have never made a personnel decision based on any improper purpose. The statements attributed to me are factually wrong, and may even be defamatory. It is unfortunate that the district and I will have to defend this case, but will do so vigorously, so that the real facts may be presented in court. After an appropriate review of the allegations, further comments may be provided."

Hashem's lawsuit argues that her problems with school officials began in October 2013 when she used a video featuring Malala Yousafzai, a young girl who survived being shot in the head by the Taliban, during a lesson. She used the video after another teacher, who had also used the video in class, recommended it, according to the suit.

The school's principal received a complaint from a parent and Hashem was called to a meeting where she was told "she could not teach current events in the same manner as her non-Arab, non-Palestinian and non-Muslim colleagues," the suit states.

Additional incidents questioning her methods of teaching followed, the lawsuit says. In an elective class, Hashem used the book the "Lemon Tree," a book about Arab-Israeli relations, for discussion. In another lesson, she asked students to compare the actions of John Brown at Harper's Ferry to those of Osama bin Laden on Sept. 11, 2001, the lawsuit says.

When a parent complained about the bin Laden exercise, "Cooley told Plaintiff that she should not mention Islam or the Middle East in her class," the lawsuit said, adding that Cooley "further stated that plaintiff should not bring her culture, life experience or background into the classroom."

In a September 2014 meeting, the lawsuit argues Steffner "accused her of not sticking to the curriculum, questioned her about her teaching and how it related to the common core, accused her of discriminating against Jewish students, and also questioned her about her place of birth, her family, and her personal life."

She was notified in April that her contract was not being renewed, and she pleaded her case before the board in June. Her employment was terminated on June 30.

The final interaction alleged in the lawsuit came when the FBI came to Hashem's home in Franklin, Somerset County, asking about what she said during the closed-door executive session with the board of education on June 15.

Hashem denies making the statement, and in her lawsuit she argues "this erroneous and defamatory allegation must have originated from the defendant board" because it allegedly occurred outside the public meeting.

Hashem's suit says that about 60 students and parents appeared at the June board meeting to support her. But the board's attorney turned nearly all of them away, the suit states.

"Approximately five individuals were permitted to enter, one at a time, to speak in support of the plaintiff," according to the lawsuit, adding that the board's "deliberations were held in private."

Hunterdon Central students react to firing of Muslim teacher

Current and former students at Hunterdon Central have taken to Twitter using the hashtag to express their support.

"A lot of people are supporting her," Mohammedi said. "They were supporting her when this was happening to her -- teachers, parents, students."

"They could not do anything," Mohammedi said. At the June 15 school board meeting, "they wanted to discuss their dismay" and ask the board to overturn its decision not to renew her contract, but weren't allowed, he said.

Bethlehem honors 5 fire companies, trooper, committeeman

Five fire companies work together to cover Bethlehem Township, and they jointly received the township's Volunteer of the Year Award Thursday.

BETHLEHEM TWP. -- The township had a "very successful and at times exciting year for a small town," Mayor Paul Muir said Thursday night at the start of the annual holiday celebration and service awards presentation.

He thanked everyone who volunteers, saying Bethlehem's fortunate to have "people who care enough to share of themselves."

In announcing the Award of Service, he called on the chiefs of the five fire companies that serve the township: Pattenburg Volunteer Fire Company, Bloomsbury Hose Company, Franklin Township-Asbury Fire Company in Warren County, Glen Gardner Fire Company, and Hampton Fire Company.

"Few people exemplify what it means to be a volunteer the way these people do," Muir said.

"These companies are all exemplary on their own," Muir said. "However, we ask that they work together to provide complete coverage for our citizens. This is not always easy as they all have different leadership, different capabilities and some different procedures. As seen in other communities, this can, at times, lead to conflict."

In Bethlehem, he said, the fire company leaders "have chosen to work together and create an environment where they can all learn together, serve together and most impotantly protect our citizens and themselves to save lives."

The chief of each department came forward to accept a Service Award, then they all posed for pictures with Muir.

The township's Distinguished Service Award went to State Police Trooper Brian Walsh, from the Perryville station.

"Trooper Walsh has consistently gone above and beyond to serve our community," Muir said, mentioning how Walsh keeps officials informed at Committee meetings, helped plan and participated in the township's community day, and "has kept us informed and safe when threats to our community became known."

Even for all that, Muir said, "the image that remains most strong for me is that of Trooper Walsh at Conley School on the first day, greeting our children. In a world with so many threats, it is imperative that our children understand they can trust those who are here to protect us and believe that they will be safe."

Committeeman John Jiminez' long service to Bethlehem was honored, and Muir introduced him as a "person who deeply cares for our community."

Jiminez has spent 12 years on the Township Committee, but started serving on the township's environmental commission, "because this is where his knowledge and passion started," said Muir. "Thankfully he saw that he could be of even greater use to Bethlehem and ran for office."

Jiminez served as deputy mayor "multiple times," Muir said, and most recently served as finance coordinator and Highlands coordinator. He "worked fervently to keep spending in check," Muir said. He praised Jiminez' dedication, saying, "every decision was met with great thought and concern as to what was best for the township and what impact will that have on our future."

In accepting his service award, Jiminez said he's always tried to do what's best for Bethlehem.

"When you take a position, you have to separate your personal desires and feelings from what good for the community," he said. "Over the years I had to do that. In voting on issues I would benefit from, I would vote for what was right for the community even if it was not advantageous to me."

Public servants have a responsibility to put their constituents first, he said. "That's what I hope I have done, and I think now it's time to give others a chance."

The night included refreshments and a chance for residents to visit, and even Santa Claus stopped by on his rounds with the Pattenburg Volunteer Fire Company.

Sheriff Frederick W. Brown announced that a long running telephone scam seeking payment for false warrants is showing up in Hunterdon County again. The scam involves a caller stating he is with the Sheriff's Office and has a warrant for that person's arrest unless immediate payment is made to satisfy the warrant. The caller will give instructions on using a pre-paid debit card from a major bank or a Green Dot Card. The caller will go so far as to give stores where these pre-paid cards can be purchased.

A variation to the false warrant scam involves the caller informing that he is from the Internal Revenue Service and demanding overdue tax payment in the same manner. The caller will provide a call back phone number where payment can be received.

Sheriff Brown informed that neither legitimate law enforcement officers, nor the IRS, will tell people to provide money card information to avoid arrest. Brown further warned that even if the caller has some knowledge, the receiver of the call should not provide any personal identification such as date of birth or social security numbers.

The receiver of these scam calls should try to gather names, the phone number given, any location if given and report them to the local police. Scams involving the IRS can additionally be reported at 1-800-829-1040.
